Hanna Basin Museum Opens

The Museum, which is located in the old Community Hall
building, is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
Originally constructed as a saloon in 1890, the hall has served
many purposes in the Union Pacific Coal  Company Town.
Sharing the Front Street site is The Miner’s Cottage, a
restored exemplary Two Town House.  The Hanna Basin
Museum is an active participant in the Carbon Cemetery
Restoration and Preservation Project. The Museum houses
the Carbon archive, resources  revealing life and death in
the first coal camp (1868-1902) along the original line of the
Union Pacific Railroad.

The museum is located at 502 Front Street and provides
a wonderful historical background for the town of Hanna
Wyoming. You can also pick up information about
lesser known area points of interest including the ghost
town of Old Carbon at the Hanna museum.

Activities:

Hanna Recreation Center
The Hanna Recreation Center is a hub of Hanna life. On the inside
enjoy the Olympic Sized Swimming Pool. Outside sits one of only three Rotary Snowplow
Locomotives
of its kind in the world. A Rotary Snowplow Locomotive is a piece of railroad
snowfighting equipment. It is characterized by the large circular set of blades on its front
end that rotate as a unit to cut through the snow on the track ahead of it. One of the three
miners monuments is also located on premises. The monument is made of marble and lists
all the miners lost in the Carbon and Hanna mines.

VFW Park & The Miners' Monuments
There is one monument to the victims of the Mine#1 Disasters of 1903,1908 and 2 monuments
to all those who died in the Carbon & Hanna mines. The first monumet is located at the Hanna
Recreation Center (mentioned above). The second is located at the cemetary and is a replica
of the one at the Recreation center. It is also made of marble and lists the names of the lost
miners. The third monument is specifically dedicated to the victims of the #1 mining disaster
and is placed near the site of the accident. 1/2 of the victims could not be removed from the
mine during the collapse in 1908. After this, the #1 mine was closed forever.

Gateway to the North Country
The famed fishing corridor know as the Miracle Mile is just North of Hanna. A fly fishing mecca,
this strip of the North Platte River has been featured in many Outdoor Magazines in recognition
of its outstanding fishing. Seminoe Resevoir is also north of Hanna and is a great destination
for boating and fishing. Tom Horn was know to hide out in the Shirley Mountains and Shirley
Basin where excellent hunting and hiking can be found.

Gateway to the South County

Head south from Hanna and you will find beautiful Elk Mountain and the ghost town of Carbon.
The Carbon Cemetary is a wonderful place for history buffs to examine grave stones going back
through Carbon and Hanna history. The cemetary is still used today! Further south enjoy the
Medicine Bow National Forest for hiking, camping, fishing, hunting and lots of outdoor fun.
