City of Baggs Wyoming
Bordering Colorado as it does, the valley was host to many an
outlaw riding hard trying to elude justice. Names as notable as Butch
Cassidy and his infamous Wild Bunch, “holed-up” around the town
of Baggs during the hay-days of the Old West. The Gaddis
Mathews House, which still stands in the center of town, was
known as a hang-out for Butch and his gang. Long after his reported
death in Bolivia in 1909, local residents insisted that Butch made
several visits to Baggs during hunting trips with friends in 1929
and 1930. Of course this is still hotly debated.

Population: 348
Elevation: 6245

Also noteworthy in Baggs is the Bank Club Bar. As
the name suggests, this building was first constructed
as a bank but later became a bar, and it is now on the
National Register of Historic Places. Baggs is especially
proud of its place as the gateway to the Red Desert.
Named for its vast expanses of dry red soil, the Red
Desert is a land of wild horses, roaming herds of
antelope, and ever-present red-tail hawks. It is also the
largest area of unfenced land in the forty-eight states.
It’s a harsh country not to be trifled with, but the stark
beauty here is more than worth the effort. Website

Gaddis/Mathews/
Cassidy House

The Ivy Pearl Mathews
Gaddis log cabin has been
described as the cabin Butch
Cassidy built and as the
cabin he lived in. In almost
certainty it was neither. It
is believed his gang, the
Wild Bunch, led by Cassidy
visited the house often.
The home served a boarding
house and a Saturday night
dance hall that the Wild
Bunch patronized. Butch
was a skilled harmonicist
and would often entertain.

Make a living in
my country and
I’ve done about all
of them one
time or twice. This
is a place
where fortunes
have always been
taken from the earth
by strong men and
courageous women
spilling their sweat
and sometimes
their blood to carve
a community
out of the wilderness.
